I ended up solving this problem by installing klite codecs, and setting my preferred codec to LAV. You can get the codecs here https://codecguide.com/download_k-lite_codec_pack_full.htm ... and use their codec tweaker to set your preferred codecs to LAV. I also noticed I was missing an "advanced" setting in Whirigig that allows you to choose the codec to use. Doing this alone would (probably) also have allowed me to play videos.

I've tried the following players: whirligig, gizmovr, simple vr, vr-x, steam video player, vivevideo player ... I've tried multiple mp4 files, and a mkv file. These files play fine on my desktop with VLC, but will not play in any of the above players. any ideas?
