Static rectangles in VR image

I have a two-year-old HTC Vive Pro-2 setup that used to run well and has developed a problem. I see occasional rectangles of static when I look around. After a while the rectangles become larger and more frequent.  Sometimes the image becomes 100% static and stays that way. Sometimes the screen goes black for about four seconds and the image returns.

 

I can make the problem go away by turning the power off on the HTC VR box, then repowering it. This does not work every time but usually within three tries the problem will stop happening.  I can do this with the game still running.

 

This problem does not seem to be impacted by CPU and GPU load. It happens on very light load games (Assto Corsa) as well as high load games (Elite Dangerous).
