VIVE 3DSP Audio SDK feature introduction : Nearfield effect

In 3DSP SDK, Nearfield effect is provided to perform the sound response near to the user’s ear.

In spatial audio, the key factors are the sound response, the time difference, and the level difference.

Traditionally, HRTF data base is measured with the distance for one meter and those key factors of spatial audio are recorded.

However, when the sound source is close to the user, the time difference and the level difference dominate over sound response.

The frequency response becomes obscure.

So, if the sound object near the user’s ear is just inferenced by the original HRTF database, the user will feel that the sound location is far, not near.

The problem also makes the user experience “feeling sickness” because what the user’s viewing is different to what the user’s hearing.

Thus, the special processing in 3DSP is designed to overcome the problem.

In the SDK, Nearfield function shows the feature for something close to the user’s ear.

When the distance of the sound object and the user’s ear is lower than one meter, the function works to adjust the sound response.

Therefore, Nearfield function can be performed for such case.

In the following video, a bee is flying around the user’s head, it is an example to show what the Nearfield effect is.

By this feature, the user can experience the sound of the bee is very close.
