3D VR Designs
Hi David, Thank you for your reply. So I'm assuming a computer backpack would be a better option?
HackPerception
It really depends on what you're after. Not many current gen backpacks work well with Pro and we're still assessing cabling options specifically for backpacks alongside our OEM partners. You may be able to get 4 HMDs running in the same area depending on environmental factors but our current testing shows that 3 units is the ideal maximum in most environments. You can also hybridize between using both wireless adapted desktops and a few backpacks so you have the flexibility offered by each system. deckert
What will be the setup for 4 lighthouses? Will there be one in each corner? I'm setting up a large space (30'x30' in my garage) and just want to get a better idea if there needs to be 1 lighthouse in each corner or do the lighthouses just double up
HackPerception
- one in each corner is the simplest setup but 2.0 is overall pretty flexible and allows for asymmetric setups. I wouldn't recommend putting two in the same position though - it will track but both positions will more or less have the same FOV and provide no real benefit. For something square like a garage, having them near the corner is most ideal. The new ones have a 150 horizional FOV so you can leverage that in your planning to ensure the coverage meets your real-world space.
CameraTraveler
@deckert Do you have a idea of when HTC will release the update to support more than 4 lighthouses working at the same time in the same play area?
HackPerception
, Basestation 2.0 updates and feature sets are managed by Valve. These updates have already occurred within the last month and the main branch of SteamVR now has all of the required infrastructure to support 4x 2.0 stations. There is a new lighthouse management and discovery tool underneath the "bluetooth" tab of SteamVR's desktop side settings which can be used to manage the station's channels. You may need to pop into the beta branch momentarily to get the most recent hardware firmware updates to to be visible for download but that depends entirely on which firmware versions are currently installed. We are not quite selling 2.0 standalone accessories yet as of this post.
CameraTraveler
Thanks for the response. I've already done that actually. I was asking about support for more than 4 lighthouses however.
HackPerception
Support for more than 4 basestations on a single HMD session is not officially supported at this time per Valve.

Does that mean the only use for more than 2 lighthouses is when you have 2 HMD's in the same space? How soon do you think we'll get support for >2 lighthouses in a space with a single HMD?
