To reproduce, keep room temperature high, play a sitted game, and keep looking at one of the stations directly. Symptoms show up after about 30 minutes.
I suspect that the overheating only occurs when most of the sensors are activated and the headset chips are running at full capacity.

For those of you, like me, that have flawless tracking for 20+ minutes, followed by grey flashes that get progressively more frequent, try cooling the front of the headset.
You are right! I have been strugling all night with my vive completely unplayable. Finally tried turning the thermostat of the air conditioning down a few degrees. Problem dissapeared!
The room was at 79F when I had the problem. Now it is 74F.

Mine is manufactured in 2016/10. Same issue, grey screeon shows up after about 15-30 minutes of play. It started about 2 months after I bought the vive. It doesn't look like there is any environmental issue that is consistently associated with this issue. Sometimes it's better and sometimes it's worse, for no apparent reason.

It should be very easy to reproduce—just turn up the heat! I can reliably reproduce the problem by heating up my room above 76F; and complete fix it by cooling down below 74F. It is so easy that it is not a problem for me anymore. But you guys need to fix the hardware. Add a fan or something.
