How to Enable Nvidia VRSS

Nvidia VRSS is a new technology available on compatible Nvidia GPUs that can boost VR visual performance when used with VRSS compatible software. It works by focusing rendering resources towards the center of the VR display where the user is most likely to focus their attention and where optical clarity is best. It functionally emulates similar optimizations made possible by eye-tracking and simulates some of the effects on hardware without eye-tracking.

While VRSS offers higher quality visuals while using less system resources on paper - it is still a very demanding use-case that renders more detail overall. The minimum requirement is a GTX1650Ti and Nvidia's current recommended is a GTX2070 Super. This is still considered an advanced feature and thus is currently disabled in Nvidia's default settings. If you encounter issues with VRS - please disable it before further troubleshooting measures are explored.

In order to enable VRSS - you'll need to be on driver version 441.87 or later. Click here for a guide on how to Clean installing new Nvidia drivers.

  • Open the Nvidia control panel and navigate to the manage 3D settings panel. Scroll down to the very last option: Virtual Reality Variable Rate Shading and make a selection. Afterwards hit "apply" to save your selection.

There are only 3 VRS options with the default-option being "off". Our recommended general use-setting for most in-home experimentation is "Adaptive". "Adaptive" will only enable VR whenever your GPU has enough headroom to avoid dropping frames while rendering the additional detail. "Always-on" should only currently be used on the most advanced GPUs and in situations where framedrops are considered acceptable.
