Updating Vive Controllers

I have tried everything I found online. I have tried USB 3.0 ports, USB 2.0 ports, removed all SteamVR USB devices. Nothing has worked. It's like I physically cannot update my controllers. I do not understand why. It is really annoying me becuase the longer I have left them without updating, the worse the tracking has become. I haven't been able to update the controllers since the day I set up the Vive for the first time, January last year. Please can someone give me any advice or assistance?
