  1. It's surely repetitive.

1st of all: hands behind your back is out of cam and since it's inside out tracking without sensors it can't be tracked.

Controllers near face they're working on, but same here: due to cam use it won't reach tracking with sensors.
Rifle mode they are working on and we got to wait how far it goes.

Hopefully we'll land where the Rift S has already reached with tracking.
But keep in mind even the powerful Facebook stuff needed several months to get this done.

You can help with doing videos and sending in issue report together with that to help them fixing the tracking.

  2. One problem I see is that Rift S developers got much more feedback and data to work with.
But with only 5 people concerning about an unlucky beta version progress takes much longer time I guess.

You could help by doing videos of the things that don't work and send it in, together with an issue report.
    Your data can help.

We're a small community of users who had the balls to get this headset... now have the balls to help getting it better 😉

  3. C'mon guys.

Are u all going to shitstorm now or what?

This is the first update which a step back and it's a beta, don't forget that.
They probably tried something out with that.

Beta versions tend to be experimental.
If you don't want that just stay on public.

It isn't true that there's no progress as the tracking got better which each beta (except this one).

You can support the developers by describing what's not working and what exactly happens.
Ranting doesn't help to get things done.

Right, I'm also not happy with the actual state but except of this update I see progress.

I'd prefer nothing done on the software if they put all their efforts into fixing tracking. I don't need some stupid decorations or any other garbage added. I just want the Cosmos to work as it should have and not how it does currently. I kick myself daily for not returning the unit when i could. The tracking is broken it's that simple. Everything else is great. Vive know they screwed up and are now trying to drag us along until they release the face plate. I hate that i will need to spend the same price as the original unit to fix the original unit. I have my Cosmos sitting next to me and every time i think of using it i remember that the tracking breaks on the majority of games i play. It's currently a very expensive paper weight. Basically the Cosmos will become the new Pro if people are prepared to double down on the money they have already spent.

I hope the Dev's prove me wrong.

I totally get you and I'd prefer either but it makes no sense to let a musician do the painters work and vice versa.

While i have no issues with Chinese Decorations I would much more enjoy having the Tracking work. The tracking on the Cosmos compared to any other VR unit i use is woefully bad. I know people are saying the firmware will eventually fix it but i cant see how firmware will fix a hardware issue.

I don't need decorations. I need my Cosmos to work. Before all the fan boys jump up and down go try a Rift or a Pro, the tracking is amazing. You will cry when you go back.

C'mon, we both know the graphics guys are not the tracking developement guys so the one got nothing to do with the others.
You can't seriously demand HTC do do nothing else on the software until tracking works completely.

  6. Just played a longer Talos Priciple session and the tracking is actually good on very low light condition.
    Kudos for that 🙂

    @C.T.

Just an idea about the cams.
I guess the exposure is the same for all of them, right?
Maybe it's worth to try an independent exposure for every cam.
So if you head a light source with one side and a dark with the other results in different exposures.

  7. So sun has passed and I tried again.
I also deleted room info before and did a new setup.

Beat Saber can be played again.

This was the first day with good light since very long time where I tested earlier on the day.
It turns out that my headset very likely will become useless on every sunny day/afternoon during spring and summer.

The headset tracks much much better on lower lightning then on very good lightning with uneven sources.
Quite disappointing as I didn't expect that after so much improvements.

  8. I gotta say the first test attempt on Beat Saber was just awful, like 8 beta steps back.
Beat Saber is unplayable now, the controllers are just floating around many times.

I don't know what you did here but I would say, please revert this beta update.
I'll test again later today on sunset to see how it's doing on less light.

    Sorry guys.

Think this is slightly unfair. There have been loads of software/firmware updates since the headset was released in October. I think all but one of them improved the tracking in some way.

The Oculus Rift S had lots of tracking issues when it was released in May last year. As far as I remember, the last tracking software update was August or September. So it took Facebook (with its vast development resources) 3/4 months to get tracking stable.

HTC are well-aware of the tracking issues and I know it is the product team's number 1 priority.

    Hang in there!

    It goes often that way...
people jumping in with their first comment, full of bashing and with zero constructive content.

    sigh

While I agree with you that this beta does provide some useful features/fixes I'm very disappointed about the lack of further tracking improvements.  These enhancements were already promised after the previous updates as were 2 handed rifle type game tracking.  So, more broken promises.  If Vive really wants the Cosmos to succeed then they must achieve Oculus Rift S inside-out tracking equivalence asap.

I bought my pre-ordered Cosmos +3 months ago now I'm finding it hard not to just pack it up in its box and store it under the pool table and maybe pull it out again 6 months down the track if it's warranted.  Trying to convince myself that the Cosmos has soooo much potential is starting to get pretty old now.  As much as I like some of the Cosmos features my Oculus Rift cv1 w/2x sensors and Vive Pro w/2.0 base stations are both superior VR headsets imho.

With saying thanks for a sidestep I didn't mean to declare tracking update as finished.
A little bit too black white view here.

I just appreciated that they found a few time between to get some other things done.

I found that Westworld Awakening (SteamVR store) looks fantastic with both my Oculus Rift cv1 and Vive Pro oled headsets.  Because of the poor blacks and contrast in dark areas it has been unplayable with my Cosmos.  Then I found the in-game graphics setting included a Gamma slider.  I moved this from 50 (default) to 75 and wow, the Cosmos now looks much better (bit blacker blacks and much better contrast).  Actually almost as good as my oled headsets now.  Hopefully, in the future, more game developers with include Gamma settings in their games.

Maybe it's possible to implement such a slider into Lens menu aswell...
I mean they just released a fix which changes the Gamma of the Revive titles extremely, why not adding 3 general sliders for gamma, brightness and contrast...

    Hi Tom,

I am honest. I was not complaining unreasonable and trying to help by reporting bugs and trying to give advices with my limited knowledge. My intention was not to be unfair to the vive team by becoming impatient and complaining unpleasant.

I am sorry, if I sounded to pushy. In my defense I am from germany and trying my best to express myself by writing in my nonnative language. 😉

    Thanks for the understanding.
    Clark

Hey Clark, I totally feel you... as I'm german too.
Sometimes you just get understood slightly different than you meant it... that's what I experience often in chats.

    @Clark_HH, @Sjunin, @A-Jey, @TomCgcmfc,

Thank you all for sharing! Initially when this post was started, I've submitted a report to our engineering team to look into. The feedback was as part of what Tom had shared due to the nature of the OLED vs LCD screen when it came to displaying "dark/black." The fact is OLED will outperform LCD in displaying a true black.

However, it is worth considering that there may be room for improvement in optimizing the black being display on LCD screens. I'll re-submit this report to our engineering to investigate with additional details.  Thanks Clark for those.

Love the healthy discussion. Thanks and stay tuned!

    Steve

    @stvnxu

    Steve, that is unacceptable.
If the black cannot be displayed as dark black for the reason of not being an oled then of course the other objects/colors have to be displayed lighter with more contrast so that you can see them.

I mean, it's possible on a normal non oled flatscreen, so I expect this on the cosmos display aswell.

    Hi Tom,

it is not about the lacking contrast because of the lcd Screen. In my opinion the vive cosmos has the best levels of all lcd screens on the market.
When you look at the game outside the hmd on the mirror lcd screen you can see right colors and black levels, even on a cheap lcd tv. There is no blaming at the game, revive or the settings. The cosmo hmd doesn’t translate the gamma curve right. That‘s all.

The gamma curve on the cosmos hmd for almost every revive games are literally wrong. The rift s lcd has worse black levels but the games look great in general.

But Tom you are totally right about the great contrast of an oled screen. I still love my black levels from the psvr. I would rather accept some screen door effect for the deep black level immersion. I would pay up to 500 dollars more for an oled screen.

    Please help us here.

    Kind regards
    Clark

In this case it should be really easy to fix then @stvnxu

As not seeing anything in dark games is really important bug and the fix should be really easy to program, maybe the developers can do a little sidequest on it, even if nearly all of you are concentrating on tracking atm.
