  1. My main use case for the XR Elite is to watch videos in standalone glasses mode.  Currently the only 2d/3d video player is the Vive Video player which has quite a few challenges to say the least.  Following are some of the issues with the software:

    1. Unable to browse for local files at will.  When clicking on the local files the software looks for video files in specific locations.  If they are not there then nothing is found.  This is very restrictive and you have to guess where the system is trying to look for the files.  Would be nice to be able to browse the file system at will.

    2. It would also be nice to be able to browse for video files on external usb storage devices then you do not have to copy to local storage.

    3. When viewing a 2d video there is no way to move the screen forward or backward, just make it larger or smaller.

    4. It would be nice to utilize the controller buttons for fast forward/rewind/pause, and be able manipulate the screen size/distance with a single click of a button.

    5. Ability to reorient 3d video viewing angle.  Currently you must sit horizontally to watch a 3d video.  There is no way to move the viewing angle into a comfortable laying down position to watch this type of videos.  There is the ability to do this in 2d videos but it takes multiple clicks and is still restrictive.  The UI should be more intuitive and allow for such features.

    6. This is not a problem with the video player but is related.  When I copy video files in usb mode using my PC to the headset the copy often fails due to a timeout  since I do not have the headset on.  The system should recognize that a copy is in progress and not abort the operation.

If HTC fixes these issues the headset will be much more usable.  The best and fastest solution would be to get SkyboxVR port their software to the XR Elite.

Those Vive battery cradles aren't cheap, I could get a 737 for less.

Does the XR Elite have some kind of mini battery like the Flow where it stays on after it dies (or gets unplugged) for just a few minutes to allow you to hotswap without shutting off?

XR Elite does have a small battery for not losing power while hotswap.  Take a look at the teardown video.

  3. I reluctantly ended up returning mine.  Ran into too many software issues.  Maybe if they get fixed I will re-purchase.  What a great shame because I had high hopes for this product especially the glasses mode.

We recommand to use it with battery cradle if you are expereincing uncomfortableness. Although it addes some weights to the system, but the battery cradle counter balanced the weight.
Also, we've also included a top strap in the box, putting it up will help.

Just noticed that part of the accessories for the XR Elite are a set of 3 Temple Pads.  This is an excellent idea and it made me realize that you should probably consider making them in 3 different sizes from wide to narrow to accommodate a variety of head sizes.

I suppose I'll ask you two the same question; Is there a low battery warning in the device when the external battery is going dead or this somehow exclusive to the Vive rear battery strap?

It is exclusive to the Vive rear battery only.  The Vive cannot distinguish between an external battery or a power brick being plugged in, it just knows it has power.

I've been using it for over a week and overall I'm satisfied.

I used the battery cradle once and put it away, and I'm only using it in glasses mode.

Please try skybox once and release a video player with similar usability. This is absolutely necessary.

The Vibe video player, which can't adjust the screen, has poor audio codec compatibility, drops video frames in half, and doesn't even support SMB, is really terrible.

Don't tell us to write this.

In addition, it should be improved so that the user can freely change the viewpoint of the screen so that the user can use it while lying down, and it must be operated only by hand tracking.

PS: how nice it would be if skybox was released on viveport......

Skybox is the best but I will settle for deovr.  I use them both in PCVR (steamVR) mode but it would be nice to have them local.

If you are having doubts on the dead pixel, I'd suggest to raise a supporting ticket to check for your option.
Attached your ticket number here, so I can also be visible on your progress. Thanks

I did contact support (ticket # 50492674) and they suggested either repair or return to Amazon.  I requested an Amazon return and will be shipping it back soon.  Also re-ordered another one however it is backordered until May.

"Hubs are unlikely to work because very few (if any) have a detachable USB cable."

What if you used a USB-C extension cable?

This hub from Amazon works very well with a wired ethernet and power delivery.  The XR Elite recognizes the ethernet connection as a tethered usb.  It seems to be a bit picky on when to recognize it so just unplug and replug the ethernet cable for it to work.

For a portable solution I purchased the Anker 737  power brick.

  9. My unit has two dark spots on the right lens. One is larger than the other and I am unable to determine if it is dead pixels or just dirt inside the lens especially the larger one because it is not quite symmetrical.

This is very bothersome since they are close to the middle and are clearly visible on a white/light background.  Unfortunately Amazon ran out of stock and I am unable to exchange it, so my only option is to return it and wait for new stock or get it repaired.

    Anybody else having similar issues?

My device went into a boot issue like this as well. I think it had something to do with how dark it was in my room. As soon as I turned on the lights it loaded right up. Others have said the same thing on reddit. VIVE team should place a clear message on the screen that tells the user to turn on the lights if that is the issue. (or just allow the device to boot normally with a warning message about potential issues).  I bet a lot of people are returning this item and/or giving negative reviews because they think their device is broken. That's what I thought. It gives a really bad first impression. Communication is key.

Totally agree - I had the same problem and struggled with this for 30 minutes and then read your post about it being too dark in the room.  As soon as I turned the lights on everything worked.  I was about to give up on the software.  Please inform people or add a message about the dark environment not just a spinning logo.

  11. There are two problems using the headset in glasses mode.

    1. Pinches my nose and partially closes my nasal passages.  I have not tried the top strap because I never saw it in the box until you mentioned it.  This problem is somewhat minor and after a few minutes I got used to it.

    2. Pinching the side of the skull.  This is a major issue the head strap cannot fix.  The first day I used the headset for several hours and  it pinched my skull so bad it is still sensitive and sore two days later.  Since the first day I am unable to use glasses mode any more due to the sensitivity of that area.  Since then I have been using the battery cradle and it works great as far as comfort but it really defeats the purpose of the main reason of me purchasing the unit which was for the portability of the glasses mode.  I would strongly recommend getting this addressed before someone injures themselves.

  12. Games that had issues in compatibility mode were No Man's Sky, Tabletop Simulator, Deo VR , Skybox, Premium Bowling, VR Chat, Subnautica ... it was just about everything I tried both on the released and beta version of the software.

some titles requires customized controller bindings to work.
Please check this articles for more details https://www.vive.com/us/support/vs/category_howto/controllers-do-not-work-properly.html

Thank you for the link to the article.  For some reason the default controller settings on the streamer app  was compatibility mode which made the controllers totally unusable with most games.  Once I unticked the box it worked much better.
