Cannot play any video files on any player

I've tried the following players:

whirligig,
gizmovr,
simple vr,
vr-x,
steam video player,
vivevideo player

... I've tried multiple mp4 files, and a mkv file. These files play fine on my desktop with VLC, but will not play in any of the above players.

any ideas?

I ended up solving this problem by installing klite codecs, and setting my preferred codec to LAV.

You can get the codecs here https://codecguide.com/download_k-lite_codec_pack_full.htm   ... and use their codec tweaker to set your preferred codecs to LAV.

I also noticed I was missing an "advanced" setting in Whirigig that allows you to choose the codec to use. Doing this alone would (probably) also have allowed me to play videos.
