New to VR - Question on playing VR games with people who don't have VR

New to VR - Can you only play VR games? In other words if my sons friends don't have VIVE, can he use his headset and play with them in VR when they are not in VR?

Hi  - it depends on the game.

 

It's possible to play a non-VR game in VR, using either the Steam Desktop Theatre mode or another app. Those apps 'adapt' those games for VR use, essentially using the VR headset as a monitor. In those cases, someone in VR could play with others who aren't in VR, through the multiplayer component.

 

There are some VR games which 'mix' VR and non-VR gameplay. For example the game Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes puts the VR player in front of a bomb (!) and the other players (outside of VR) have to work with them to defuse it.

 

Those are pretty much your options in terms of mixing VR and non-VR.
