Hey , as  mentioned, you can do - it depends on the title. Some support both, some prefer one or the other.

 

For example a game like Elite: Dangerous, which is based around a cockpit, encourages seated play. Something like Vanishing Realms, which is about walking around and exploring a dungeon, is really only playable standing. Check each title before purchasing, basically.
