Games glitching after 30 minutes of play

Im thinking its my headset since it happens in multiple games.  Creed, Gorn, Swords of Gargantua, etc.  Everything works for 20-30mins just fine and then my character in all games gets about 15ft tall, has long arms and the games are unplayable.  Anyone have a fix for this or know what i might be doing wrong?

@Dusky That's super weird - I've never heard of anything quite like this. My initial guesses based on your description would be:

  • Your hardware is hitting some sort of thermal limit and your GPU or CPU begins overheating
  • Your GPU has a physical hardware issue
  • Your GPU has a driver or memory issue (you can try downgrading the GPU driver)
  • You power supply may be under-supplying your GPU mid-load?
  • Some other weird OS-specific thing (which you can attempt to isolate/solve via a Window Clean Install which is a nuclear option)

Your talking about apps that are made in both Unity and Unreal so it's not engine specific.

@Dusky Revisiting this with fresh eyes, I'm now curious if you're entire worldspace moves when this happens. I initially read this as a rendering issue but it could be more of a tracking related issue. Does your SteamVR chaperone move at all or do the walls and floor remain stationary? Maybe the headset is getting some weird tracking data (due to something like a reflection) and it solves the headset position as being in a really weird position (say 15 feet higher than it is) and the game engine doesn't know how to handle it.

The walls, floor and everything is stationary.  The setup is in my office and it's actually my son that plays it.  At one time a month or more ago he was playing Skyrim but he was in the floor and I did some adjusting so he would be above ground but it never really worked right so he stopped playing that game.  Gorn and Creed used to work great and for long periods of time and just recently (last few weeks) they started glitching after 30 minutes of play.  I'll do some reset's and look further into it and see if I can't make it work.  I mainly just wanted to find out if it was a common issue and if there was a quick fix.  I'll run it on my other computer too and see if it does the same thing.  I thought maybe the headset was overheating or a base station was going bad.

@Dusky - The chaperone grid should never move - if that moves it's a good sign there is a physical tracking issue. What's confusing about this situation is that they'll work for a while and then break. If something is making SteamVR think the HMD is suddenly high off the ground, it's weird that the controllers stay in the correct relative position (hence the super long arms). SteamVR can dynamically change a configuration and do things like adjust the floor - what's confusing though is that the controllers should be the same relative distance from the HMD when it makes these changes.

I'm not sure what the chaperone grid is.  I'll google it  🙂  But yea, for whatever reason his arms get really long and I've even seen him on his knees punching his little heart out  lol  I ask him why he's down there and he says his arms are super long and he can't hit anything when he's standing up.  Now that I think about it, sometimes his whole body is tall.  My son isn't not here right now so I can't ask him the exact issue.  Sometimes his character gets too tall and other times the arms go really long.  I'm not sure if one happens on one game and the other happens on a different game.  I'll get more details from him.

@VibrantNebula  ok, I just talked to my son.  So, I guess this happens in all games and even in the Steam Startup zone where he selects games.  It also happens at times right when he logs on and when it does he restarts Steam VR.  Sometimes he's super tall and other times he's in the floor.  His arms also get really long at times and this happens whether he is tall or in the ground or even at normal height.  I'll do a reset of everything tonight and re position the base stations and see if any of this helps.  The system is a year old and he hasn't always been gentle with it as walls, tv's and doors have been punched  😮
